Lego Harry Potter Review

A Review of Lego Harry Potter: Years 1 - 4 (PS3)

by: Lark

So, I'm a total Harry Potter nerd. I've read all the books (multiple times) and seen all the movies. I may or may not have quoted said books and movies several times while playing this game. Harry Potter is such a rich universe, with tons of characters and an interesting story. Even before this game was announced I remarked several times that I wanted to see a Lego version. I greatly enjoyed the Indiana Jones and Star Wars version, so I was super excited when this finally hit store shelves.

The actual gameplay is fluid and easy. You learn a bunch of spells over the course of the game that you can access easily with the press of the triangle button or R1. You gather ingredients for potions that you can use to pull handles (strength potion), turn into another character (polyjuice, of course) and age (aging potion). There's even an invisibility potion. You even learn transfiguration and herbology (handling those pain in the ass mandrakes and their screaming) and get to ride on broomsticks. (Only Harry is any good at it though. Hermione rides one like it's a mechanical bull.) You spend plenty of time just running around Hogwarts Castle and attending lessons and exploring inbetween story levels. Nearly Headless Nick will lead you to where you go need to go next - helpful because the castle is huge and detailed.

One thing that's different in this game is that you only unlock characters by finding their character stud. So even if you get to control a character during story mode, they're still not available until you find their character stud. This makes it hard to unlock large portions of the game until later. There are several special abilities you'll need to get through the game, the biggest one being taking control of a dark wizard. (Snape counts.) Other abilities include using a time turner, sending your pet out to dig or go through tubes, and using a book to unlock cabinets.

Each book has six levels, for a total of 24, plus there's all the lessons and castle exploring, which makes for a pretty involving game - especially if you're looking to collect all the spells/gold bricks/characters and cheats. So this game will keep you busy for awhile. It's not a difficult game, as Lego games never are. If you die, your character just appears again, ready and raring to go.

The cut scenes, which of course have no speaking in the Lego game tradition, are pretty humorous and entertaining. They tend to follow the movies more than the books, and although the humor can be pretty absurd sometimes, it never detracts from story completely. There are so many characters to collect. As I've said, I'm a huge Harry Potter nerd and know pretty much every character. But there were a few that made me think twice about where they came from! If the character was in the first 4 books, they're in this game. There are even totally generic characters that you'll probably never want to use.

Two things are annoying about this game. Friendly fire and glitches. If your playing partner isn't watching where they're aiming, they can easily hit you with a jinx and freeze you/turn your head into a plant/make you bald etc. It's not devastating by any means, but it's annoying to have to be frozen for a couple of seconds because you can't prevent friendly fire.

But worse than that is the glitches. So far we've only been able to get through one playing session without experiencing any freezing or - worse - restarting while loading. The freezing has occurred during loading between scenes or when using the time turner. The restarting happens randomly. The game will suddenly freeze and then restart, returning not even to the game load screen, but the PS3 menu! It's really a ridiculous amount of glitches from a game that's been in development for awhile and from a company that consistently makes quality titles.

Glitches aside, if you enjoy the Lego games or Harry Potter, you will love this game. It's tons of fun and there's lots to do, especially if you've got someone else to play with. This is the perfect game to kick back, relax and play with your significant other. I'd have to give it a 8 out of 10 - the deductions mostly being made for the glitches.

So What is Going On With This Show?!

Hi, everyone. This post is long overdue.

So, are we ever planning on doing a podcast ever again? Yes. Real life kind of threw things off track for awhile. We all have full-time jobs and other responsibilities that keep us busy and make it hard for us to get together. Even over Skype.

But I think another problem is that this podcast kind of started to turn into something different from what I wanted when I started it. You can get reviews and news about gaming anywhere you go on the internet. Type either of those into Google and 9 billion results come up. I wanted to do something different. Sure, we'd talk about what new games we liked, but I wanted to focus more on gaming and culture, history - making fun of stuff (my real favorite). That kind of stuff.

So I'm trying to retool. Get some kind of new format together. And I want to hear from you. What would you like to see on the show? Please, I'd love to have some input! Leave a comment here, send us an email at podcast @ buy-shinra.com, or even hit me up on twitter

I think we're gonna shoot for doing a show next month.

Brian's Opinion: Am I the only one who thinks moving is stupid?

I remember when I first heard about the Nintendo Wii and its motion based gaming...the first thing that came to my mind was EPIC FAIL. Granted, the only thing that was epic fail was my completely narrow minded point of view as the Wii leads this generation in console sales, which in itself is impressive considering it has almost NO TOP SHELF GAMES, but I digress. This isn’t about my dislike of Nintendo's seriously suspect business practices, nor is it about the deluge of junk they allow on their system because of the gimmicky controller. No, this is about how Sony and Microsoft now want a piece of the action.

Since E3 is this week the gaming world loves to show off its muscles to the geeky community and this year continues to be no different. Today was Microsoft's press conference which included only two serious points of interest: One, they are now going to have a 360 Slim with a 250 gig hard drive and built in Wi-Fi (Screw you people who got the Elite or Pro 360 and had to pay 100 bucks extra for the wireless adaptor!) and of course Microsoft's big hullabaloo the “Kinect”, pronounced “connect”, to usher in a new world of motion control in games. Instead of a controller you would use your body to control the action, whether it be driving a race car or running from gunfire in whatever game you are playing. It’s all based on how you move, which seems like a fantastic idea....until you really think about it. The Wii's controls tend to feel gimmicky, unless of course you are playing a game made by Nintendo who seem to understand what they are doing. Microsoft's offering takes this gimmick feeling to a whole new level. Using your whole body as a controller seems really just downright silly to me. I can only imagine the face of a spouse, boy/girlfriend, parent coming into a room and seeing their spouse/ boy/girlfriend/child etc. jumping around the room like they are hopped up on some sort of illegal narcotic. And to top it all off there is a big drop off between gaming skill and real skill. Just because you are good at Call of Duty multiplayer doesn't mean it will translate into your actions with this new type of controller. With a controller it's all hand-eye coordination, but now you’re adding a more physical element. The first time little Johnny turns on Halo 4: Master Chief's Amazing Shootout Adventure on Duck Planet and is blasted to bits by the Quack Army because he couldn't get under cover in-game fast enough - some pretty big frustrations are going to result.

Which brings me to the games...

So far everything I have seen of Natal...I mean “Kinect”, has been mini games and demos and no real meat and potatoes games. In all honesty I don't think I will find one because quite simply they are incredibly hard to execute. I'm not saying it can't be done, but I don't think it's going to be done right by many. Even in the games they have shown it off in it just seems....well...gimmicky. Especially since they still need to have controller support that would use the Kinect over a controller which, so far anyway, seems to give you more control? The concept is interesting but the execution is seriously flawed in my eyes. That's not to say my favorite console maker at this time is any better...

Sony has announced the Sony Move but unlike Kinect there is a controller involved. Now I haven’t seen too much on it and Sony's press conference is still a day or two off, so I don't have as much information. But I already feel the exact same way as I do with Kinect. Unlike the Kinect, Sony Move still retains a controller - though by looking at the controller it makes me think of things best used by adults in the privacy of their own bedrooms - not in video games (Though Strip Dead or Alive with your significant other is encouraged by the author of this opinion piece.) While the demos I have seen of Move are a little less gimmicky, it still remains a gimmick and I fail to see how this is the future of gaming. Instead I see this as nothing more than expanding on a gimmick Nintendo sold to us a few years ago. This doesn't change gaming as we know it. It hampers it if anything, as we now try to justify both of these controller systems and deal with the games which are now going to be shoehorned into using it. What makes this again completely useless is the fact that both 360 games and PS3 games still will need to have standard controllers as to not alienate the people who do not jump on this bandwagon -  which in my opinion will be the majority of them. The games that are Kinect and Move exclusive stand a chance to fail big time if these two add ons do not hit it off big.

This whole motion gaming thing to me is limited. It's silly and I don't see the valid gaming application of it. I can understand the idea of wanting to be immersed in a game and I can see why some people think this is a solid idea, but to me it's just something that doesn't work. Will Kinect and Move sell well? My guess is probably not, as the Wii gets away with it because it’s an integral part of the console itself. Sony and Microsoft cannot do that without risking alienating gamers who didn't jump on the Add-on wagon. So you may be thinking: “Well, Nintendo succeeded with a motion controller, why can't the other two?” I again point out that Nintendo has made its living selling gimmicks and for years people have been eating them up. The same cannot be said of Sony or Microsoft. Could I be eating my words in a year or two? Possibly. But right now I am not impressed with either of the motion systems presented by either of these two companies. The market for them is limited and it doesn't make gaming better, unless it finally brings those 12 year old Call of Duty addicts down a peg.

Since Brian decided to take the week off, we get to talk about something the rest of us enjoy - Final Fantasy VII! With XIII being released in almost a month, we'll be doing something every show about Final Fantasy leading up to this much anticipated (especially by me) game. In this show it's the good, the bad and the ugly of Final Fantasy VII. We thought long and hard about what big (and little things) that we really loved about the game, and really just wanted to break the controller over. The whole cross dressing bit? Well, it becomes a bit of debate. Just another episode of GP!

...Oh. What? Oh, you're expecting news. Yeah. So was I. Kind of a crappy news week. Really nothing worth linking to. Hopefully there will be some discussion worthy topics in our next show. (February 24th.)

Oh yeah - due to spacing issues, the old episodes are going to disappear as new ones are uploaded. Episode 1 is already history, at least for the immediate future. Sorry!

News!

So in lieu of this week's show (sorry, we'll be back next week!), here's a few interesting news stories:

Longer console life cycles
Long story short, looks like the major consoles will have a much longer lifespan this time around, with the 360 not even at the halfway mark. Looks like that whole thing about the PS3 having a 10 year lifespan might have actually been a realistic prediction. Personally, I'm psyched about this, as I've gotten pretty tired of buying a new console every 3 years.

Netflix coming to the Wii?
Sure, it's already available on the other (real) consoles, but coming from someone who doesn't have a PS3 yet and doesn't subscribe to Gold Live, this would be awesome if it comes to pass. Though I'm a bit skeptical of the Wii being able to handle this.
EDIT:
Wii's Netflix sign-up page now available
Well that was quick.

Child's Play raises more than $1.7 million
Wow. Even with this crappy economy, we still managed to top last year's record. Simply amazing.

And finally, easily the most ridiculous story I've read in awhile:
Ron Jeremy says games are far worse for kids than porn
Wow. I don't think anything needs to be said about this one.
